Ray Denning escaped jail in a rubbish skip and Smith managed to walk out of the front gates of Pentridge Prison. Both started a life of crime as teenagers, Ray Denning was homeless at 13 years after he witnessed his mother suicide, when set herself alight to escape her husband's beatings.
